Jaanimmarik secondary students celebrated the end of second term with a day of Inuit games in the gym on Thursday, February 26. Girls and boys from grade 7 to secondary 5 competed in events such as one-foot high kick, triple jump, kneel jump, Muskox pull, stick pull, head pull, and arm pull. The students challenged each other and themselves for their personal bests while their classmates and teachers cheered them on. Many of the students are training with hopes of representing Team Nunavik in the Arctic Winter Games in Greenland in 2016.
As the seal for one-foot high kick was raised higher and higher, all of the students and teachers became silent with anticipation, their mouths agape with awe. Most notably, Cheyene Clements impressed everyone with his kick at 2m 35 cm. The students were recognized at a closing speech and medals ceremony for the best athletes for the events in each age division. The students were proud to celebrate their traditions, cheer on their friends, and display their skills to the school community. Congratulations everyone!
